African Trade & Investment Development Insurance
Overview
Established in 2001, African Trade & Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) is a pan-African organization that offers trade credit and political risk insurance to companies, investors, and lenders engaged in business across the continent. With deep roots in Africa, ATIDI is well-positioned to understand and assess the unique risks associated with the region, providing tailored solutions to mitigate these challenges. ATIDI's primary focus is on improving Africa's risk perception and attracting affordable investments to support both sovereign governments and the private sector. The organization specializes in Political Risk Insurance, Credit Insurance, and Surety Insurance, offering protection against risks such as non-payment, currency inconvertibility, and contract disputes. These solutions reduce uncertainty, unlock capital flows, and enable sustainable economic development across its member states. Over the years, ATIDI has facilitated inward investment in Africa by providing insurance against trade and investment risks. The organization continues to be a catalyst in trade and investments, serving as a de facto business risk mitigation tool for Africa. This role contributes to the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and supports the recovery process of economies in the face of potential global economic recessions. ATIDI has supported several flagship projects across Africa, showcasing its commitment to sustainable economic growth and financial stability. Notably, the 20 MW Ituka West Nile Uganda Ltd solar project promotes renewable energy access. In Benin and Togo, ATIDI supported the refinancing and re-profiling of existing loans, underscoring its commitment to supporting financial stability and economic reforms. Furthermore, ATIDI has been involved in key infrastructure transactions, including road and irrigation projects in Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, and Senegal, among others. In all these countries, ATIDI's comprehensive credit risk insurance enabled access to longer debt tenures and reduced all-in interest rates. In collaboration with multilateral development banks, ATIDI has provided cover for blended finance transactions such as the BITA Water Project in Angola (World Bank), improving access to clean water and sanitation, and an SDG loan in Benin (African Development Bank). Additionally, ATIDI's Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF) enhances bankability by providing risk mitigation for development initiatives in renewable energy. As of 31 December 2023, ATIDI had supported trade and investments into Africa valued at over USD85 billion since its inception. The organization continues to play a pivotal role in transforming Africa into a prime trade and investment destination, offering innovative risk-mitigation and financial interventions to unlock development on the continent.
