Ágústa Guðmundsdóttir

Overview

Ágústa Guðmundsdóttir is a professor emerita in the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Iceland. She co-founded Zymetech, a biotechnology company established in 1999, which focuses on developing medical products and cosmetics derived from cod enzymes. Under her leadership, Zymetech has achieved significant milestones, including the development of products like PreCold for combating the common cold and Penzim for skin health. The company was honored with the Icelandic Innovation Award in 2015 for its outstanding contributions to product development and market success. In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, Guðmundsdóttir has an extensive academic background. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the University of Virginia in 1988. Her research has primarily concentrated on utilizing cod enzymes to address microbial infections and advance medical treatments. She has also held visiting professorships at institutions such as the University of California, San Francisco, and New York University. Beyond her academic and business pursuits, Guðmundsdóttir has been actively involved in various professional organizations. She served as the chair of the Public Relations Committee at the University of Iceland from 1990 to 1993 and was a board member of the New Venture Capital Fund of Iceland (NSA) from 2003 to 2009. Her contributions to the field of biotechnology and her entrepreneurial spirit have made her a prominent figure in Iceland's scientific and business communities.
