Overview

Arthur G. Cohen was a distinguished real estate developer and investor based in New York City. He co-founded Arlen Realty & Development Corporation in 1959, which became one of the largest publicly traded real estate investment trusts in the early 1970s. The company developed suburban shopping centers nationwide and acquired the discount retail chain E.J. Korvette in 1971. In 1975, Arlen partnered with Aristotle Onassis to build Olympic Tower on Fifth Avenue, a 52-story building in Midtown Manhattan. Cohen's portfolio also included properties such as 888 7th Avenue, 1500 Broadway, and 1166 Avenue of the Americas. In addition to his work with Arlen, Cohen invested in various sectors, including lodging, restaurants, aviation, and manufacturing. Notable projects included the development of Worldwide Plaza, the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Times Square, the Peninsula Hotel in New York City, and the Hotel Pennsylvania. He was also involved in the acquisition of two million square feet of industrial buildings in Dumbo, Brooklyn, alongside real estate investor Jeff Gural and David Walentas in 1979. Cohen was a philanthropist and served as a trustee for institutions such as Brandeis University, New York Law School, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He received the Jewish National Fund Tree of Life Award and was named Man of the Year by the Anti-Defamation League. Cohen passed away on August 9, 2014, in Kings Point, New York, at the age of 84.
