Overview

Established in 1983, the Brunei Investment Agency (BIA) is the sovereign wealth fund of Brunei, responsible for managing the nation's external reserves and diversifying its economy. Operating under the Ministry of Finance and Economy, BIA is one of the most secretive investment entities globally, reporting directly to the Ministry. Its portfolio includes significant investments in luxury hospitality, global equities, and financial services firms. BIA's investment strategy focuses on diversification across various asset classes, including private equity, real estate, equities, bonds, currencies, and gold. The agency has made substantial investments in high-end hospitality assets, notably through its subsidiary, the Dorchester Collection, which manages luxury hotels in cities such as London, Los Angeles, Paris, and Dubai. Additionally, BIA holds significant stakes in global financial institutions, including a nearly 20% stake in the parent holding company of Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund, acquired in August 2025. In recent years, BIA has expanded its investment activities to include technology infrastructure, such as supporting the launch of Brunei's first national AI application platform in December 2025. The agency's investment philosophy emphasizes long-term value creation and economic diversification, aligning with Brunei's Vision 2035 to reduce dependence on oil and gas revenues and foster sustainable economic growth.
