Clemmie Spangler
Overview
Clemmie Spangler was an American businessman who, in 1995, acquired full ownership of National Gypsum, the largest private wallboard producer in the U.S., through his private investment firm, Delcor Inc. Prior to this, he had been the chairman of National Gypsum and owned a 20% stake in the company. Under his leadership, National Gypsum commanded 23% of the domestic gypsum board market. Before his involvement with National Gypsum, Spangler had a diverse career. He joined his father's company, C.D. Spangler Construction, in 1958 and served as president for 28 years. He also led the Bank of North Carolina, merging it with NCNB in 1982, which later became part of Bank of America. In the 1970s, he served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education and was the chair of North Carolina's Board of Education from 1982 to 1986. From 1986 to 1997, he served as president of the University of North Carolina system, advocating for affordable tuition and donating his salary to individual campuses. Spangler was also known for his philanthropic efforts. He served as President of Harvard University's Board of Overseers from 2003 to 2004, and through his C.D. Spangler Foundation, he donated to institutions like the University of North Carolina, Harvard University, and Charlotte's Teach for America. In his personal time, he enjoyed repairing antique grandfather clocks. Clemmie Spangler passed away on July 22, 2018, leaving behind a legacy of business leadership and educational advocacy.
