Dumith Fernando
Overview
Dumith Fernando is a Sri Lankan angel investor with a background in supporting early-stage companies in Asia. He is the Chairman of Asia Securities Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, a leading independent investment banking, wealth management, research, and stock broking firm in Sri Lanka. With over two decades of experience in international investment banking, he has held various roles across equities, investment banking, private equity, and corporate strategy at JPMorgan Chase and Credit Suisse in New York and Hong Kong. Prior to returning to Sri Lanka in 2013, he was Managing Director and Group Chief Operating Officer for Credit Suisse Asia Pacific, overseeing a business with over USD 2.5 billion in revenue across 12 countries. He holds a BA in Physics and Economics from Middlebury College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. In addition to his role at Asia Securities, Fernando has been actively involved in Sri Lanka's startup ecosystem. He served as the Chairman of the Lankan Angel Network (LAN), Sri Lanka's largest network of angel investors, and was instrumental in launching the Angel Fund, the country's first angel fund dedicated to early-stage startups. Under his leadership, the Angel Fund invested in several startups, including Niftron, Traccular, Medica, Soulboner Clothing, and Ophir. He has also been involved in organizing events like the Asian Business Angel Forum (ABAF) and Venture Engine 2017, aimed at boosting Sri Lanka's startup ecosystem. Fernando's contributions extend beyond the startup sector. He was appointed as the Chairman of the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in July 2020, succeeding Ray Abeywardena. He has also served as an Independent Director of Union Assurance PLC and Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC and as a member of the Economic Policy Steering Committee of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. His extensive experience and leadership have significantly influenced Sri Lanka's financial and entrepreneurial landscapes.
