E.ON SE is a European multinational electric utility company based in Essen, Germany, operating as one of the world's largest investor-owned electric utility service providers. The company focuses on energy networks and customer solutions, managing electricity and gas distribution networks, and offering products and services to enhance energy efficiency for private and business customers. E.ON operates in over 30 countries, serving more than 50 million customers, and is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index, DAX stock index, and a member of the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 index. E.ON's investment strategy emphasizes substantial investments in network expansion, modernization, and digitalization. In the first half of 2025, the company invested €3.2 billion, surpassing the prior-year figure by 11 percent. Most of these investments—€2.5 billion—were directed toward the company's network business, focusing on new connections for renewable energy plants and the modernization and digitalization of network infrastructure. In March 2018, E.ON announced the acquisition of the utility portion of renewable energy utility Innogy through a complex €43 billion asset swap deal with RWE. This deal resulted in E.ON becoming a pure retail and distribution company, with RWE acquiring both Innogy's renewable energy generation portfolio and E.ON's remaining energy generation assets. The deal was finalized in September 2019. E.ON's commitment to innovation is evident in its venture capital activities. In February 2024, the company launched a venture fund in collaboration with the European Investment Fund (EIF), allowing third parties to participate. The fund is managed by Future Energy Ventures (FEV) and aims to support startups and innovations in the energy sector, particularly those contributing to the energy transition.
