Overview

Energiefonds Overijssel is the first and largest regional energy fund in the Netherlands, established in 2012 by the province of Overijssel. The fund aims to accelerate the energy transition by providing financing to sustainable, circular, and renewable energy projects within the province. Unlike traditional subsidies, it offers participations, loans, and guarantees, contributing to energy savings, CO₂ reduction, entrepreneurship, and innovation in Overijssel. The fund's strategy involves investing in a diverse range of sectors, including energy, renewables, sustainability, technology, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, waste management, water management, chemicals, forestry, mining, telecommunications, and retail. It focuses on various stages of investment, such as growth, late stage, pre-IPO, buyout, turnaround, and distressed situations. The geographical focus is primarily on the Netherlands, particularly the Overijssel province. Since its inception, Energiefonds Overijssel has mobilized over €280 million in financing for renewable energy projects in the region, aiming to achieve a cumulative CO₂ emissions reduction of 2 million tonnes by 2027. The fund's investments have led to a 4,576 terajoule reduction in energy use and a 260,000 tonne CO₂ emissions cut in Overijssel, equivalent to the energy use of 71,755 households. This revolving fund structure allows recovered resources to be redeployed in support of the same objectives, ensuring sustained impact in the region.
