Ensign Peak Advisors is the investment management arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, responsible for managing the Church's reserve funds and investments. Established in 1997, the firm operates as a non-profit corporation and is overseen by the Church's Presiding Bishopric. The firm employs approximately 70 individuals, all of whom are members in good standing with the Church. As of 2020, Ensign Peak Advisors managed assets totaling approximately $124 billion, making it one of the largest religious investment entities globally. The firm's investment strategy is globally diversified, encompassing various asset classes such as public equity, fixed income, real estate, private equity, private credit, hedge funds, infrastructure, cash, and natural resources. In 2019, a whistleblower alleged that the Church had amassed nearly $100 billion in assets, raising questions about the use of member donations. In 2023, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Ensign Peak Advisors and the Church for failing to disclose the Church's investments and for creating shell companies to obscure the portfolio's size and control. The SEC imposed a $4 million penalty on Ensign Peak Advisors and a $1 million penalty on the Church. Despite these challenges, Ensign Peak Advisors continues to manage the Church's investments, focusing on financial stewardship and supporting the Church's mission worldwide.
