Overview
The Gründungswettbewerb – Digitale Innovationen is a German federal competition aimed at supporting aspiring entrepreneurs and young start-ups with innovative digital business ideas. The competition is open to all sectors, including energy, healthcare, digital economy, manufacturing, mobility, agriculture, cultural and creative industries, and education. Participants can submit their ideas twice a year, with each round awarding up to six start-up ideas with €32,000 in prize money to support their business establishment. Additionally, up to 15 other ideas receive cash prizes of €7,000 each. A focus prize of €10,000 is also awarded each round on current topics of the federal government. All participants receive written feedback on their business idea, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks, along with recommendations for further development. Winners benefit from extensive coaching, mentoring, and networking activities. Since 2014, start-ups awarded in the competition have secured over €600 million in external financing, effectively utilizing the public recognition, prize money, and support services for their business establishment. The competition is managed by VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
