Overview

The Healthcare Innovation Venture Fund is a collaborative partnership between community-serving health systems and Hatteras Venture Partners, a healthcare investor with a 25-year track record of nearly 100 investments. Through this participatory model, the fund invests in 15 to 20 early-stage companies across healthcare IT, medical devices, and diagnostics, aiming to enhance care delivery, improve financial sustainability, and generate attractive returns for health system partners. Health systems actively shape the fund’s investment strategy by participating in regular investment discussions, contributing clinical insights, and helping validate technologies that align with their priorities, while Hatteras manages all operations, diligence, and execution details. The fund has already invested in a growing portfolio of early-stage companies solving real-world challenges in healthcare, including 410 Medical, Avivomed, Gozio Health, GoCheck Kids, BEKHealth, and SafeRide Health. These investments are validated by both clinical and financial diligence, ensuring they are smart, mission-aligned investments. The Healthcare Innovation Venture Fund is structured to de-risk the investment experience for health systems by deploying capital gradually, vetting investments for safe, long-term viability, and sharing insights among limited partners to lower risk through collective validation. This approach has been demonstrated through a trusted partnership with its founding limited partner, WakeMed Innovations, a leading community health system based in Raleigh, North Carolina. For almost five years, WakeMed has worked with Hatteras to help shape investment decisions, pilot emerging technologies, and demonstrate that even a single health system can drive meaningful change, laying the foundation for expanding the fund to include other like-minded systems.
