Established in 1987, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA) is a 'Navratna' Government of India enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). IREDA is a Public Limited Government Company established as a Non-Banking Financial Institution engaged in promoting, developing, and extending financial assistance for setting up projects related to new and renewable sources of energy and energy efficiency/conservation. The agency operates under the motto: 'ENERGY FOR EVER'. IREDA's investment strategy focuses on providing financial assistance for projects in sectors such as wind, hydro, solar, and waste-to-energy. The agency offers higher loan amounts, up to 90% of project cost, with longer repayment periods, up to 25 years for sector-specific projects. As of September 30, 2025, IREDA has supported the installation of over 27.52 GW of renewable energy capacity, with cumulative sanctions of Rs 271,063.41 crore and disbursements of Rs 171,127.45 crore. In November 2023, IREDA went public with an initial public offering (IPO), listing on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The agency's vision is to expand and transition renewable energy towards affordability, scalability, and sustainability in India. Its mission is to be a pioneering, participant-friendly, and competitive institution for financing and promoting self-sustaining investment in energy generation from renewable sources, energy efficiency, and environmental technologies for sustainable development. IREDA's track record includes sanctioning its highest-ever loan of Rs 24,000 crore in the 2021-22 fiscal year. The agency has also been granted 'Navratna' status by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) in April 2024, recognizing its significant contribution to the renewable energy sector in India.
