Itana
Overview
Itana, formerly known as Talent City, is a Nigeria-based company dedicated to establishing the first Digital Free Zone in Africa. The initiative aims to create a conducive environment for global and Pan-African technology, finance, and service-oriented businesses to operate and scale effortlessly across the continent. The name 'Itana' is derived from the Yoruba word 'Itanna,' meaning 'kindling of a fire,' symbolizing the company's mission to ignite innovation and growth in Africa's digital economy. The company secured $2 million in pre-seed funding in September 2023 from investors including LocalGlobe, Amplo, Pronomos Capital, and Future Africa. This funding is intended to support the development of the Itana District, a 72,000 sqm mixed-use district in Alaro City, Lagos, Nigeria. The district is designed to be a live-work-build environment, fostering a community of entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals. Itana's vision is to replicate successful models like Estonia, Shenzhen, and Dubai, positioning itself as the preferred jurisdiction for digital businesses in Africa. In September 2024, Itana partnered with Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to jointly develop the digital economic zone. AFC agreed to provide project development funding and lead the financing of phase 1 of the project, which is budgeted at around $100 million. This collaboration underscores the commitment to unlocking Africa's digital economy and providing a robust infrastructure for businesses to thrive. Itana's comprehensive approach includes offering business services such as visa facilitation, local bank accounts, and competitive incentives in taxation, immigration, banking, and regulation, all aimed at creating a seamless experience for businesses operating within the zone.
