Overview
Established in September 2018 under the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act, Japan Investment Corporation (JIC) is a sovereign wealth fund dedicated to strengthening Japan's industrial competitiveness and promoting open innovation. JIC provides risk capital to business areas of policy significance through investments in funds under its umbrella and private funds. Its investment focus areas include creating a virtuous cycle of domestic investment and innovation, fostering startups, leveraging untapped regional management resources, and promoting business restructuring in response to market changes. JIC operates through several subsidiaries: JIC Venture Growth Investments Co., Ltd., which focuses on promoting innovation to solve social and industrial issues; JIC Capital, Ltd., which supplies risk capital to create new industries and promote business consolidation; and INCJ, Ltd., which was merged into JIC in October 2025. These subsidiaries collectively contribute to JIC's mission of enhancing Japan's industrial competitiveness and expanding the investment ecosystem. In recent years, JIC has been involved in significant investment activities, including the acquisition of Shinko Electric Industries, a chip-packaging unit of Fujitsu, for $4.7 billion in December 2023, and the privatization of semiconductor company JSR Corporation in a $6 billion deal in April 2024. These investments reflect JIC's commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening key industries within Japan.
