Established in September 2018 under the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act, Japan Investment Corporation (JIC) is a sovereign wealth fund dedicated to strengthening Japan's industrial competitiveness and promoting open innovation. JIC provides risk capital to business areas of policy significance through investments in funds under its umbrella and private funds. In recent years, JIC has been involved in significant investment activities, including the acquisition of Shinko Electric Industries, a chip-packaging unit of Fujitsu, for $4.7 billion in December 2023, and the privatization of semiconductor company JSR Corporation in a $6 billion deal in April 2024. These investments reflect JIC's commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening key industries within Japan.
