Les Otten is an American businessman and investor recognized for his significant contributions to the ski resort industry and his involvement in professional sports. He began his career in the early 1970s as a ski instructor and quickly advanced to management roles, eventually acquiring Sunday River ski resort in Maine in 1980. Under his leadership, Sunday River expanded and improved, setting the stage for his future ventures. In 1995, Otten founded American Skiing Company, which grew to own several ski resorts across the United States, including Killington in Vermont and Steamboat in Colorado. His innovative approaches to resort management and development left a lasting impact on the industry. In 2002, Otten became a minority owner and vice chairman of the Boston Red Sox, contributing to the team's success during his tenure. After leaving the Red Sox in 2007, he focused on other business ventures, including the acquisition and redevelopment of The Balsams Resort in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.
