MassMutual Impact Investing

Overview

MassMutual Impact Investing is a division of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) dedicated to investments that generate positive social and environmental impact alongside financial returns. The division manages several funds, including the MM Catalyst Fund and the First Fund Initiative, focusing on diverse-led and overlooked businesses across the United States and Canada. These initiatives aim to address systemic barriers and advance racial equity by investing in Black, Latino, and Indigenous-led companies and first-time fund managers. The MM Catalyst Fund, launched in 2021 with an initial $50 million commitment, has invested in 16 businesses across Massachusetts, supporting Black-led companies and startups in rural areas. In April 2023, MassMutual launched a second MM Catalyst Fund of $100 million to continue this mission and selectively invest alongside fund managers within the First Fund Initiative. This brings the company's total impact investment commitment to $300 million in just over two years. Through these initiatives, MassMutual Impact Investing seeks to unlock untapped growth in the U.S. economy by providing equitable access to capital for diverse entrepreneurs and fund managers. The division's approach includes innovative deal sourcing, selection, diligence, and underwriting to identify high-potential investments that reduce structural inequities and advance racial equity, aiming to drive both financial returns and social change.
