MCE Social Capital

Private Investment Firm San Francisco, California, United States ·Founded 2006

Overview

MCE Social Capital is a nonprofit impact investing firm that provides flexible capital to enterprises committed to generating sustainable livelihoods in emerging markets, with a focus on women and the environment. Since its inception in 2006, MCE has disbursed over $377 million in debt capital to 133 financial service providers and 34 small and growing businesses across 62 countries. Their innovative loan guarantee model leverages the excellent credit of high-net-worth individuals and foundations to borrow capital from U.S. and European financial institutions and accredited investors, which is then strategically deployed to support vulnerable entrepreneurs perceived to be at high risk of default. MCE invests across two portfolios: Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs) and Financial Service Providers (FSPs). SGBs are enterprises in the 'missing middle' that create jobs, help smallholder farmers improve productivity and income, and facilitate access to clean water and energy. FSPs include microfinance institutions, fintech, and other financial service providers that help people in rural areas gain access to credit, savings, insurance, and business education. MCE's investments aim to enhance leadership, financing, employment, and earning opportunities for women, promote environmental products, and reduce vulnerability to climate shocks. MCE's impact is amplified by its partnership with many international organizations, financial institutions, foundations, and other entities dedicated to improving lives around the world. As of June 30, 2024, MCE's Guarantor community consisted of more than 130 individuals and foundations representing $144 million in loan guarantees, backing MCE's FSP and SGB portfolios with $119 million and $25 million respectively. These inspiring, accomplished global citizens are bound together by their commitment to ensuring everyone, no matter where they live, has an opportunity to earn an income and thrive. Their engagement with MCE powers the organization's innovative model and allows it to reach some of the most challenging regions of the world where other lenders often won't go.
