National Social Security Fund Uganda

Overview

National Social Security Fund Uganda is a government agency responsible for managing social security savings for private sector employees in Uganda. The Fund is a contributory scheme, funded by contributions from employees and employers, with the employer contributing 10% and the employee 5% of the employee's gross monthly wage. The Fund is regulated by the Uganda Retirement Benefits Regulatory Authority, while the Minister of Gender, Labour & Social Development, and the Minister of Finance, Planning & Economic Development are responsible for policy oversight. The Fund manages assets worth over UGX 25 trillion, invested in Fixed Income, Equities, and Real Estate assets within the East Africa region. The Fund offers various benefits to its members, including age benefits, withdrawal benefits, invalidity benefits, survivor's benefits, and emigration grants. The Fund also offers a voluntary savings plan called the Smartlife Savings Plan, available to Ugandan citizens, legal non-Ugandans, and refugees. The Fund's mission is to be a relevant partner to its members through continuous innovation in the provision of social security. The Fund's vision is to be the Social Security Provider of choice. The Fund's values include being member-focused, creative, collaborative, and having integrity. The Fund has over 700 employees.

Investment Focus

• Mandatory membership for all employees in the private sector not covered by the government’s pension scheme
• Voluntary membership for self-employed individuals and contributing members wishing to make additional contributions
