Niclas Sundström

Overview

As a Co-Managing Partner at Worthwhile Capital Partners, Niclas Sundström advises institutional investors on geopolitics, geoeconomics, and other key policy developments that shape investment landscapes. His advisory focus spans statecraft-driven themes such as macroeconomics, clean energy security, secure supply chains, critical technology policy—including emerging defence and dual-use investment frameworks—as well as AI, cybersecurity, and the geoeconomic underpinnings of natural climate solutions strategies. Niclas is currently a member of the US-EU Trade and Technology Council Working Group on Secure Supply Chains and advises the Ukrainian government on mobilising private capital for the country’s post-war clean energy reconstruction. In 2025, he was appointed Advisor to the NATO Centre of Excellence for Security of Supply and serves as a senior Advisor to the CEO and Founder of the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB). He also leads a long-running project examining Chinese involvement in critical infrastructure across Europe. With over 30 years of experience, Niclas has held senior roles at Citibank, Citigroup, and Salomon Smith Barney, and has spent nearly two decades advising senior leadership at Goldman Sachs and BP. He has served on the Advisory Board of Finisterre Capital, acted as a long-standing advisor to Brummer & Partners, and worked with the G7 on financial and policy intelligence within Russia. His government advisory work spans Western and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Ukraine, and Russia. Niclas has been extensively based across Russia, Ukraine, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, and the UK. He has dedicated a significant part of his career to China-related issues, particularly within the context of escalating West-Russia and West-China tensions. His involvement in Russia-China economic relations dates back to the 1990s, when he engaged with Chinese authorities on Russian economic reform. He also has direct experience in post-war and post-authoritarian financial and economic reconstruction in the Balkans and the former Soviet Union at the highest levels.
