Overview

The Northwestern University Endowment is the investment arm of Northwestern University, responsible for managing its financial assets to support the university's mission. The endowment is stewarded by the Investments Committee of the University's Board of Trustees and managed by its Investment Office. With $15.3 billion in funds, its primary goal is to effectively manage these assets to support the university's mission. The Investment Office employs outside managers for diversified strategies including public equities, fixed income, absolute return, private equity, and real assets, while also managing a portion of the fund internally. The office comprises 24 staff members, including 12 dedicated investment staff. The endowment's investment strategy focuses on a diversified portfolio across various asset classes and stages, including growth, late stage, pre-IPO, buyout, turnaround, and distressed investments. Geographically, the endowment primarily focuses on investments within the United States, spanning multiple industries such as technology, healthcare, real estate, financial services, consumer goods, energy, industrial, materials, telecommunications, media, utilities, consumer services, basic materials, consumer non-durables, and technology hardware & equipment. The endowment has a transformative impact on the university and its students, enriching the educational experience, expanding research opportunities, promoting inclusive access, and supporting the development of a strong and vibrant community.
