Peter Mattis

Overview

Peter Mattis is an American computer programmer, entrepreneur, and business executive. He is the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) and co-founder of Cockroach Labs, a company he co-founded in 2014. His work as a programmer includes launching the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) while still in college and assisting in the source code development of CockroachDB, the namesake software of Cockroach Labs. Prior to founding Cockroach Labs, Mattis was employed as an engineer for Google, where he contributed to the development of the Google Servlet Engine and played a role in the creation of Colossus, a new version of the Google File System. In 2013, he co-founded Viewfinder, a photo-sharing app, which was acquired by Square, Inc. in December 2013. Mattis then joined Square's New York City office as a senior member of the company's East Coast team. In 2015, Mattis co-founded Cockroach Labs with Spencer Kimball and Ben Darnell. The company developed CockroachDB, a distributed SQL database designed for cloud-native applications. Under Mattis's leadership as CTO, Cockroach Labs has grown significantly, raising over $600 million in funding and achieving a valuation of $5 billion as of December 2021. The company has been adopted by major enterprises, including Netflix and Comcast, and has expanded its product offerings to major cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Mattis holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He is also active in CrossFit and was named CrossFit South Brooklyn's athlete of the month in January 2014.
