Overview

Established in 2008, Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government, dedicated to enhancing public infrastructure investment across Scotland. Operating at arm's length from the government, SFT collaborates closely with both public and private sectors to ensure value-for-money in all public sector infrastructure investments throughout the country. Its mission is to support the delivery of high-quality, sustainable public infrastructure and to promote the use of innovative financing and procurement methods. SFT's strategic focus encompasses several key areas: delivering and managing net-zero infrastructure and finance programs that support the Scottish Government's National Infrastructure Mission to drive inclusive economic growth and build resilient places; improving outcomes for the construction industry as a vital component of Scotland's economy; and attracting investment into Scotland's towns, cities, and communities to deliver housing, enhance public service delivery, secure economic benefits, and contribute towards Scotland's net-zero carbon target. The organization employs a team of professionals from diverse public and private sector backgrounds, including technical, legal, and financial specialists, who bring extensive commercial expertise in infrastructure financing, procurement, and delivery into the public sector. SFT's workstreams are organized into four primary areas: Infrastructure Strategy, Infrastructure Investment, Infrastructure Delivery, and Infrastructure Management. These workstreams focus on activities such as delivering a 25-30 year infrastructure 'needs assessment' to provide a long-term vision of the country's infrastructure requirements, attracting private investment into the energy transition and sustainable places, improving delivery across billions of pounds of infrastructure projects with a focus on building programs for efficiency, accelerating the adoption of digitalization and modern methods, and enhancing public sector property asset management by maximizing sharing and use of existing buildings, integrating maintenance and decarbonization, securing best value from surplus assets, and providing centralized expertise to the public sector as 19 PFI projects reach the end of their contracts. Through these initiatives, SFT aims to create sustainable infrastructure that contributes to a thriving Scotland.
