Overview

Sunbird Resources Limited is a Chinese-backed private investment firm primarily engaged in mining and infrastructure development in Uganda. The company was granted a 21-year large-scale mining license by the Ugandan government to extract 8,000 tonnes of limestone daily from Rupa Sub-County in Moroto District, Karamoja Sub-region. This limestone is essential for cement production, positioning Uganda as a significant player in the cement industry. In partnership with West International Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed West China Cement Limited, Sunbird Resources is establishing a 6,000 tonnes per day clinker lime and one million tonnes per year cement factory at Nadunget Sub-County, Moroto District. The project is expected to generate 600 direct and 3,000 indirect employment opportunities, contributing to Uganda's economic growth. Upon completion, the cement factory aims to be the largest in Uganda, reducing reliance on importing clinker and cement, thereby saving the nation over US$700 million annually. The foundation for the cement factory was laid by President Yoweri Museveni in September 2023, marking a significant step towards enhancing Uganda's industrial capacity and fostering economic self-sufficiency.
