Overview

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is a national public entity established by the South African government to bridge the gap between research and commercialization. Its primary objective is to stimulate and intensify technological innovation to improve economic growth and the quality of life for all South Africans. TIA achieves this by supporting the development and commercialization of technology-based products, processes, and services across various sectors of the economy. TIA offers a range of funding instruments, including the Technology Development Fund, which invests in high-potential projects undertaken at institutions such as Science Councils and Higher Education Institutions for pre-competitive end-stage research and technology development. Additionally, the Youth Technology Innovation Fund aims to promote and stimulate the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among young people by providing access to financial, intellectual property, regulatory, and business support resources. Beyond financial support, TIA provides advisory services, technical and business support to investee companies, and facilitates the development of innovation skills to support technology innovation and commercialization. Through its strategic goals, TIA seeks to use South Africa’s science and technology base to develop new industries, create sustainable jobs, and help diversify the economy from commodity exports towards knowledge-based industries. This is aimed at addressing modern global challenges and achieving investments in sectors such as Advanced Manufacturing, Mining, ICT, Energy, Agriculture, Industrial Biotechnology, and Health.
