Tim Porter

Overview

Tim Porter is a Managing Director at Madrona Venture Group, a Seattle-based venture capital firm specializing in early-stage technology investments in the Pacific Northwest. He joined Madrona in 2006 and concentrates on B2B software companies, particularly in intelligent applications, SaaS, cloud-native software infrastructure, the modern data stack, machine learning, DevOps, and cybersecurity. Tim serves on the boards of several Madrona portfolio companies, including Anomaly, Echodyne, Eclypsium, Esper, Highspot, Lassen Peak, Outbound AI, Ravenna, Runway, Spice AI, Stacklok, Uplevel, NewDays, Dropzone AI, and Entire. He has also been involved with past investments such as Algorithmia, Appature, AppFog, and buuteeq. Prior to joining Madrona, Tim was a key member of Microsoft's corporate development group, where he was responsible for sourcing, structuring, and negotiating acquisitions, strategic investments, and joint ventures, focusing on enterprise software, security, and mobile. He closed 14 transactions totaling over $850 million, including acquisitions of Softricity, FrontBridge Technologies, ProClarity, Whale Communications, and Giant Company Software. Earlier in his career, Tim worked nearly five years for broadband satellite startup Teledesic and spent his last year there also working for Craig McCaw's Eagle River Investments. Tim holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a member of the board of the Washington Technology Alliance and serves on the board of impact-first investment fund Global Partnerships, as well as its Social Venture Fund's investment committee. Outside of work, Tim enjoys spending time with his wife and two children and is passionate about sports and the outdoors, including basketball, running, mountain biking, snowboarding, fishing, golf, and tennis.
