UCeed Haskayne Student Fund

Overview

The UCeed Haskayne Student Fund (UHSF) is a student-managed venture capital fund at the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business. Established in Fall 2020, it is the first student-run venture fund in Western Canada, providing students with hands-on experience in early-stage investing. Governed by fund managers and supported by a network of associates, faculty, alumni, and venture partnerships, UHSF manages over $1 million in assets and employs an evergreen structure where realized returns are continually reinvested. This structure allows UHSF to support, nurture, and contribute to its portfolio companies through both investments and unique consulting projects. UHSF was created as a partnership between the University of Calgary, Innovate Calgary, the Creative Destruction Labs, and several esteemed members of the venture capital community. Its mandate is to invest in North American-based high-growth companies across all industries, with the intention of becoming a true 'evergreen' fund. Students accepted into UHSF are enrolled in the accompanying FNCE469/669 course, where they build skills and experience in early-stage investing. The program is a two-year commitment, with the first year focused on establishing an educational and experiential foundation for venture capital investing and the second year focused on leading UHSF investment decisions. Through the course and time spent managing the fund, students have access to a variety of community business leaders in a unique, hands-on learning experience focused on sourcing, screening, and evaluating innovative early-stage ventures and making impactful investment decisions. Students are involved in the venture capital investment process every step of the way.
