William G. McGowan
Overview
William G. McGowan was an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist known for his role in founding MCI Communications. He began his career in venture capital in the mid-1950s, establishing a consulting business in New York City that specialized in rescuing troubled companies. In 1958, he co-founded COMAC, which later became Powertron, a company that developed ultrasonic degreasing equipment. McGowan took over Powertron for $25,000 in 1959 and sold it for $3 million in 1962. In 1968, McGowan acquired a half interest in Microwave Communications Inc. (MCI) for $50,000 and became chairman of its predecessor, Microwave Communications of America. Under his leadership, MCI became the country's second-largest long-distance carrier by 1990, with $9.5 billion in revenue. McGowan's strategic vision and leadership were instrumental in challenging the telecommunications monopoly of AT&T, leading to significant industry deregulation. His contributions have left a lasting impact on the telecommunications sector, and he is remembered as a visionary entrepreneur who reshaped the long-distance telephone market in the United States.
