William J. Rutter was an American biochemist and angel investor specializing in biotechnology and life sciences. He was the founder and chairman of Synergenics, LLC, a private investment firm that managed a consortium of biotechnology companies at various stages of development. Synergenics provided financing, executive resources, and a collaborative environment to its portfolio companies, facilitating the commercialization of innovative technologies from concept to reality. Prior to founding Synergenics, Rutter co-founded Chiron Corporation in 1981, a pioneering biotech firm known for developing the first recombinant vaccine for Hepatitis B and sequencing the HIV genome in 1984. He also played a key role in the discovery, cloning, and sequencing of the Hepatitis C virus in 1987. Rutter's leadership at Chiron significantly advanced the biotechnology industry, particularly in the areas of vaccine development and viral research. Throughout his career, Rutter was recognized for his contributions to science and biotechnology. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he received numerous awards, including the Biotechnology Heritage Award in 2003. Rutter passed away on July 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of scientific innovation and investment in the biotechnology sector.
