Women's Equity Lab

Overview

Women's Equity Lab (WEL) is a network of diverse, successful women investors from regions across North America who collaborate to make informed investments in early-stage companies. Launched in 2017, WEL has grown to include over 400 women investors, with syndicates operating in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, Manitoba, the Atlantic, and Silicon Valley. Each group maintains its own investment thesis while also making investments across Canada, focusing on supporting women-led businesses. WEL's investment strategy emphasizes collaborative investing, where all partners actively participate in the investment process. This approach fosters a learning environment where investors gain a deeper understanding of angel investing, build a diverse network, and create a portfolio of innovative companies. The sectors of interest include technology, healthcare, education, agTech, information technology, and environmental initiatives. The groups primarily invest in early-stage ventures, with individual investments typically around $5,500, contributing to a pooled fund ranging from $125,000 to $150,000. By engaging women in the angel investment process, WEL aims to increase the representation of women as advisors, board members, venture capitalists, and angel fund managers. This initiative not only supports the growth of women-led businesses but also contributes to the broader goal of achieving gender parity in venture investing. WEL's model has been recognized for its impact on empowering women investors and fostering a more inclusive investment landscape.
