LinkedIn Providing Services: The Free Inbound Lead Form

Turn on LinkedIn's Providing Services section to get a native lead form, rank on linkedin.com/services, and take inbound that never touches your connection cap.

Most consultants treat their LinkedIn profile as a CV and then wonder why nobody enquires. LinkedIn has shipped an actual lead form — a "Request free consultation" button that drops structured enquiries into your inbox — and it sits behind a toggle almost nobody switches on. Turning it on takes about fifteen minutes and puts you on a second search index that your competitors are not indexed in.

Key Takeaways

  • It is a separate search surface: linkedin.com/services is its own index, distinct from People search, with far fewer listed providers per category
  • It adds a native lead form: buyers submit project type, budget, timeline and a message without connecting to you or spending an InMail credit
  • Inbound does not touch your connection cap: LinkedIn's ~100–200 weekly connect limit applies to outbound only, so every Services enquiry is a conversation you did not pay for
  • Specific beats broad, every time: "B2B Content Marketing" competes with a fraction of the providers that "Marketing" does, and the cap is 10 service categories
  • The free-consultation toggle is separate: leave it off and your listing is searchable but has no form, which roughly halves inbound

Video Guide

LinkedIn's Services section is a free inbound lead form most consultants never switch on. Here is the two-minute setup, including the "Provide free consultation" toggle that turns it into an enquiry button:

What Is the LinkedIn Providing Services Section?

Providing Services is a profile section — the successor to what LinkedIn previously ran as ProFinder and Marketplaces — that lists you as an available service provider in up to ten fixed categories. It does three things at once.

It publishes you to linkedin.com/services, a standalone search surface where buyers browse by service category and location rather than by job title. It adds a "Request free consultation" button to your profile. And it routes submissions into your ordinary LinkedIn inbox as a message thread, no connection required in either direction.

Why the separate index matters more than the button

People search on LinkedIn is saturated. Services search is not. The pool of providers who have bothered to list themselves under a given sub-category is small enough that a complete, specific listing can reach the first page within a week in most mid-sized markets.

The asymmetry is the whole opportunity: the buyers using that surface have already decided they are hiring someone, and there are far fewer of you standing there.

Check your country first

The rollout is uneven. Services is broadly live in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Singapore, most of Western Europe, Brazil and Mexico, and either absent or restricted in parts of the Middle East, parts of Africa and mainland China.

The fastest test takes five seconds: open https://www.linkedin.com/services/ in a desktop browser. If the category search interface loads, you are eligible. If you land on a generic help page, this feature is not available to you yet and nothing below will help.

What Most Guides Get Wrong About Providing Services

Wrong: "pick the biggest category so more people find you." This is exactly backwards, and it is the single most common way profiles waste the feature. LinkedIn's Services search matches the buyer's typed query against the category label. "Marketing" puts you in a pool competing with hundreds of thousands of providers globally; "Content Marketing" cuts that by roughly an order of magnitude; "B2B Content Marketing" cuts it again. Ranking nowhere in a huge category returns nothing. Ranking top-three in a narrow one returns enquiries.

Wrong: "fill all ten slots to maximise coverage." The categories render publicly on your profile. A visitor who sees ten unrelated services does not read "versatile" — they read "generalist," which is the exact positioning most consultants are trying to escape. Seven or eight is the practical ceiling, and five focused ones outperform ten scattered ones.

Wrong: "the section is enough on its own." Being listed and being contactable are different settings. The "Provide free consultation" toggle lives inside the Services editor and is off by default for many profiles. Without it, buyers who find you have to fall back on a connection request — which caps at 300 characters, gets ignored at scale, and burns a slot from your weekly allowance.

How to Set Up Providing Services: Step by Step

Step 1: Open the "Open to" button on desktop

On your own profile, the "Open to" button sits under your headline — the same control used for "Finding a new job" and "Hiring." The third option is Providing services. Mobile can enable this, but the category picker and the ten-service cap are easier to reason about on desktop.

Step 2: Choose specific categories, not umbrellas

LinkedIn does not accept free text. You pick from a fixed taxonomy of roughly 250 categories, capped at ten. Type what you do and let it autocomplete; if your exact service is not listed, take the closest neighbour rather than retreating to the umbrella above it.

Umbrella (avoid)Specific alternative (pick these)
MarketingContent Marketing, SEO, Demand Generation, Lifecycle Marketing
CoachingExecutive Coaching, Sales Coaching, Career Development Coaching
ConsultingBusiness Analytics, Financial Advisory, Change Management Consulting
WritingGhostwriting, Copywriting, Technical Writing, Grant Writing
DesignUX Research, Brand Design, Presentation Design, Web Design
Software DevelopmentWeb Development, Custom Software Development, Mobile App Development
SalesSales Consulting, Lead Generation, CRM Consulting
LegalContract Law, Intellectual Property Law, Business Law

Step 3: Set the service area, and match it to your profile

Pick country plus optional cities, and turn on Remote unless your work is physically local. Add cities even for remote work — Services search is location-biased and most buyers filter by city before anything else.

The trap here is a mismatch: if your profile location says San Francisco and your Services location says "Bay Area" without the city listed, you drop out of San Francisco results entirely. Make the two agree.

Step 4: Write the description like ad copy

You get roughly 300 characters, and it renders on the search result card. This is the billboard, and most profiles fill it with "passionate consultant helping businesses grow." Three lines do more work:

  • Verb and outcome. "Ship B2B content that closes deals, not clicks."
  • Proof. A number you can defend.
  • Qualifier and call to action. Who you are for, and what to do next.

Step 5: Turn on "Provide free consultation" explicitly

This is a distinct toggle inside the Services editor, and it is the difference between a listing and a lead form. Switch it on and the "Request free consultation" button appears on your profile.

One honest constraint: if you offer the free slot, honour it. Toggling it on and then replying to ask for a paid discovery fee is a fast route to being reported.

Step 6: Add project media

The editor accepts up to twenty media items — case studies, PDFs, videos, images — that render as a portfolio strip under your services. Three to five strong pieces beat twenty weak ones. If your work is text-only, skip this; thin media performs worse than none.

Step 7: Route the enquiry to a booking link

The default flow ends in your inbox, and the inbox-to-call gap is where most enquiries die. Reply with a scheduling link in your first message and save it as a canned response:

Thanks for reaching out — happy to walk through this.

Grab any 20-min slot that works: calendly.com/yourname/services-intake

Before the call, please share:
1. The outcome you want in 90 days.
2. Any existing systems we would plug into.
3. Rough budget range so I can be direct on fit.

Because the thread is inbound and inbox-native, the link is not treated as outbound InMail and does not attract the spam filter.

Step 8: Verify as a logged-out visitor

Open a private window, search your primary category on linkedin.com/services, and filter to your city. You should appear within about fifteen minutes. If you do not, the cause is almost always a location mismatch between your profile city and your Services location field.

What to Expect

Numbers vary enormously by category and profile strength, so treat these as ranges rather than promises.

ProfileTypical consult requests per month
New or thin profile0–2
Established, moderately competitive category2–8
Established, hot category (fractional CMO, Webflow, executive coaching)10–25

Show-up rate on booked calls tends to run higher than cold DM or cold email inbound, because the form pre-qualifies on budget and timeline before you ever reply. On search visibility, a complete listing typically reaches the top 10–30 of its primary category within a week, and the top three of a narrow sub-category in a mid-sized market within a month.

Gotchas Worth Knowing Before You Start

  • Ten is a hard cap. LinkedIn will not accept an eleventh. Cull before you add.
  • Recruiter-adjacent categories are noisy. List "Recruiting" or "Career Development Coaching" and expect a meaningful share of inbound to be job seekers pitching themselves rather than buyers hiring you.
  • Notifications are unreliable on some Android builds. The lead-form thread does not always fire a push. Check the inbox daily rather than trusting the badge.
  • You cannot delete request threads, only archive them. Budget five minutes a week to sweep.
  • Endorsements feed the ranking. Skills and Services are separate surfaces, but the tokens overlap. If you list "Content Marketing" as a service, endorsements on the matching skill are a ranking input — worth asking five to ten past clients directly. Our LinkedIn endorsements guide covers the fastest way to get the first batch.
  • Premium helps but is not required. Premium profiles get a badge lift in Services search. The free tier still ranks respectably, and buying Premium purely for this is not worth it.
  • Company pages have their own Services tab. Enabling it on your personal profile does nothing for your company page, and vice versa.
  • The form fields are fixed. Project type, budget, timeline, message — you cannot edit them, and buyers routinely leave budget blank. Put your real qualification questions in the booking intake instead.

Where This Fits in the Rest of Your Profile

Services drives the visit; the rest of your profile decides what happens next. The sequence that works is your banner making a promise, your About section surviving the "see more" cut, and your Featured section delivering the proof — with Services as the surface that brings strangers to all three.

If you are building a consulting practice specifically, the wider playbook lives in our guide on getting clients for your consulting business on LinkedIn.

How ConnectSafely.ai Fits

Providing Services is entirely first-party and free — there is nothing to automate about the toggle itself, and you should not try. Where ConnectSafely helps is everything downstream: keeping the profile that Services sends people to actually worth landing on, and handling the follow-up conversations at a pace that does not put the account at risk.

Our free LinkedIn tools cover the profile side with no signup — the headline generator, the billboard generator for your banner, and the carousel generator for the case study you will want in Featured. If your inbound volume grows past what you can answer by hand, that is the point at which a tool earns its place; below that, the toggle and a saved reply are genuinely enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn on the Providing Services section on LinkedIn?

Open your own profile on desktop, click the "Open to" button under your headline, and choose "Providing services." Pick your categories from LinkedIn's fixed list, set your location and description, and switch on "Provide free consultation" inside the same editor.

Is LinkedIn Providing Services free?

Yes. The section, the linkedin.com/services listing and the consultation lead form are all available on the free plan. Premium profiles get a small badge lift in Services search results, but buying Premium solely for this is not worth the cost.

Why is my LinkedIn Services listing not showing up in search?

The most common cause is a location mismatch between your profile city and the location set in the Services editor. The second most common is picking an umbrella category where you rank nowhere. Test in a logged-out private window about fifteen minutes after saving.

Do LinkedIn Services requests count against my weekly connection limit?

No. The weekly cap of roughly 100–200 requests applies to outbound connection requests you send. Services enquiries are inbound and arrive as message threads without either side spending a connection slot.

How many services should I list on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn caps you at ten, but seven or eight is the practical maximum and five focused ones usually outperform ten scattered ones. The categories display publicly, so a long list reads as generalist rather than versatile.
