Tips for a good Outlook address

New Microsoft accounts are offered @outlook.com and @hotmail.com addresses; live.com wasn't among the choices on Microsoft's sign-up page when we checked in September 2026.
Should I choose outlook.com or hotmail.com?
Both are Outlook.com mailboxes. outlook.com reads as more current, and because they're different addresses, a name taken on one can still be free on the other, so check both.

Only Microsoft can tell you, when you create the account. Keep a few ideas ready; numbered versions help when a common name is taken.
Does Outlook.com support +tag addresses?
Yes. Adding +something to your username still delivers to your inbox, which helps with filtering. Microsoft notes you can't sign in or send email with the +tag version.
