CMA CGM Energy Fund (PULSE)

Corporate VC France ·Founded 2022

Overview

CMA CGM Energy Fund, also known as PULSE, is the energy-focused investment arm of the CMA CGM Group, dedicated to accelerating the group's energy transition towards a Net Zero objective. Established in September 2022 with a budget of €1.5 billion over five years, PULSE aims to support the decarbonization of the Group and the entire transport and logistics sector. The fund's investment strategy is based on two main pillars: innovation, with investments in electrification, energy efficiency, or carbon capture; and industrial projects for the production of alternative fuels for CMA CGM vessels (bio and e-fuel) and the production of renewable energy (photovoltaics) for onshore assets. In 2023, PULSE committed €453 million to 40 projects, including CARBON (France’s largest solar panel production plant), Verkor (an EV battery gigafactory), and Neoline (a wind-powered ro-ro vessel now under construction). PULSE has also invested in EODev, which develops hydrogen-based solutions and technologies with the goal of accelerating the energy transition by offering sustainable, reliable, and accessible industrial solutions. In August 2025, CMA CGM, through PULSE, made a strategic minority investment in Vanguard Renewables, a U.S.-based renewable natural gas provider, to secure long-term access to RNG for its fleet. This partnership underscores the role of RNG in reducing emissions across maritime transport, as the sector moves to align with the International Maritime Organization’s net-zero framework. Additionally, in April 2024, CMA CGM and Bpifrance launched a €200 million fund dedicated to accelerating the energy transition in the French maritime industry. This fund is part of CMA CGM's broader €1.5 billion PULSE energy initiative, targeting decarbonization across various sectors, including shipping, tourism, fishing, infrastructure, and renewable energy. The establishment of this fund represents an important step in the deployment of PULSE, whose investment strategy focuses on innovation and industrial energy projects. Through these initiatives, PULSE continues to drive CMA CGM's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, supporting the broader maritime industry's transformation towards sustainability.
