Helsinki University Funds

Overview

Helsinki University Funds is the investment arm of the University of Helsinki, dedicated to supporting the commercialization of university research and fostering innovation. The funds consist of over 350 discipline-specific and named funds established by alumni, friends, and other supporters, with assets accumulated over the past centuries. Each year, approximately €400,000 is granted in various scholarships and grants to students and researchers. The funds' assets include properties, listed securities, and direct investments in unlisted companies and funds. The University of Helsinki Group, which includes Helsinki University Funds, reported a turnover of €1.2 billion in 2024, with a balance sheet amounting to €2.1 billion. The group's equity ratio stood at 82.5% in 2024. As part of the University of Helsinki Group, the funds contribute to the university's mission of advancing education and research. Helsinki University Funds collaborates with various organizations to enhance its impact. For instance, in 2020, it partnered with the Finnish Business Angels Network (FiBAN) to provide business angels with opportunities to discover high-tech solutions and spinout companies from the University of Helsinki. This collaboration aims to support the commercialization of deep-tech innovations emerging from the university's research, spanning industries such as health and life sciences, education, and artificial intelligence.
