Purple Angel

Overview

Purple Angel is an informal angel investment group based in Canada, formed in early 2001 by several retired alumni of Bell Northern Research (BNR). The group is bound together by the relationships and experience of its members, who collectively review prospective investments. Investment decisions are individual, as is customary with many organized angel groups. To date, Purple Angel has invested in 29 companies, all but two in the National Capital Region. The group's investment criteria include a preference for companies in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, within a one-hour driving distance, to facilitate close collaboration. They are open to proposals with demonstrable technology or other intellectual property that can create scalable customer value. Purple Angel has invested in companies at various stages, from those with no revenue to those needing expansion capital, but they prefer companies that have achieved proof of concept with initial funding or grants. Notable investments include Seregon Solutions Inc., which received a Series A initial investment on November 3, 2009. The group's members bring extensive experience from their previous roles, such as David, who was a Managing Director at Summerhill Venture Partners and BCE Capital, and has invested in over 30 companies, including Medialight, Vistar Telecommunications, and Endwave. Their collective expertise spans product development, new market development, and systems engineering, contributing to the success of various startups in Canada and the U.S.
