Overview

The Kresge Foundation is a private, national foundation that works to expand equity and opportunities in America's cities through grantmaking and social investing in arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services, and community development. The foundation operates nationally and in four focus cities: Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans, and Fresno. In collaboration with its partners, the foundation helps create pathways for people with low incomes to improve their life circumstances and join the economic mainstream. Established in 1924 by Sebastian Spering Kresge, the foundation has a long history of supporting various sectors, including education, health, and community development. Over the years, it has awarded grants and social investments totaling over $5.1 billion, with more than $1 billion directed to initiatives in Detroit. The foundation's endowment was valued at $4.3 billion as of June 2021. Guided by values of equity, creativity, partnership, and stewardship, the Kresge Foundation emphasizes dismantling structural racism and expanding opportunities for low-income communities. Its strategic focus includes policy advocacy, systems change, and place-based strategies, supported by a $350 million Social Investment Practice launched in 2015. The foundation's approach prioritizes resident leadership, cross-sector collaboration, and a five-part strategy spanning economic revitalization, neighborhood stability, environmental sustainability, and the arts, while addressing systemic barriers through practical solutions in climate initiatives and education-focused programs.
